These are the components I will be looking for in the article summaries.
Article title: The title of the article itself.
Background & research question: In a couple of paragraphs (9-12 sentences), summarize the background information and current understanding of the system what is known, what is unknown. Based on that background information, what did the researchers wish to identify/learn/confirm in their experiment.
Methodology: In one paragraph (4-5 sentences), describe the overall methodology of the experiment(s) using easy to understand language. What was measured, how was it measured, etc.
Results: In one paragraph (4-5 sentences), describe what the researchers found overall. Specific numbers are not necessary here unless they help characterize the results. So, something such as, exposure to ____ increased blood pressure, which was blocked by _____, but not ______, which indicates that the effect is due to _____.
Conclusions: In one paragraph (4-5 sentences), what can be concluded from the experiments(s) taking the results together as a whole? What does this mean in terms of our understanding of the system/pathway?
Importance / concerns: One paragraph (4-5 sentences) – Why was it important that this study be conducted? Outside of general knowledge, how can/could these results be used to improve lives? Also, were there any significant concerns / flaws with the study? Controls that were overlooked, assumptions that were made that may not be appropriate, etc.
Personal interest: In one paragraph (4-5 sentences), describe what about the paper was of the most interest to you and why?
