    Student 1. Ethics involves judgements in what is right and wrong (Edge & Groves, 2018). If healthcare members fail to maintain the standard legal and ethical conduct, sanctions can be career ending (Edge & Groves, 2018).

    Laws are in place to have a minimum standard of an expectation to be performed by society (Edge & Groves, 2018). This applies in healthcare. Many codes of ethics involve rules that require us to provide care within the law that is our professional conduct (Edge & Groves, 2018).

    Professional etiquette provides us guidance and serves as a regulation for the conduct of practitioners. When you are a part of a professional group such as healthcare, you act as a peer to the other members on your team (Edge & Groves, 2018). Professional etiquette revolves around good practice and manners. Examples of professional etiquette can include avoiding negative comments about a practitioner, especially around a patient, being involved in appropriate relationships at the workplace, and staying within boundaries for our profession (Edge & Groves, 2018). While these rules may not be written, breaking them can have serious consequences.

    Sanctions involving ethical, professional, and inappropriate legal conduct vary. For ethical conduct, sanctions involve loss of professional reputation along with professional affiliations (Edge & Groves, 2018). Breaches in legal requirements lead to punishment as prescribed by law (Edge & Groves, 2018). Lapse in professional etiquette involves loss of professional respect and fellowship (Edge & Groves, 2018).

    During my research I read an article regarding a breach in confidentiality to a third party. This was a Vermont court case of an emergency nurse that told a police officer a patient who was being treated for a lacerated arm, had been intoxicated, drove to the hospital, and was going to drive home (Gavejian, 2019). The disclosure of the patient information was unnecessary and broke patient confidentiality. The patient had standing to then sue the hospital and employee that tended to her for negligent disclosure of personal health information (Gavejian, 2019).

    In order to avoid this behavior, the nurse should have only released this information to a police officer if they were legally aloud to do so. The patient was being treated for a lacerated arm, not for being intoxicated.     Student 2:Professional etiquette is an area of ethics which includes maintaining appropriate relationships in the workplace, as well as with other patients. Etiquette keeps order and safety within the health care setting (Edge & Groves, 2018).

    I believe that professional etiquette should be exercised every day on the job and off the job. It is our job as nurses to display ourselves in a leadership role.

    When it comes to judgment, this is when we have that internal conversation when making a decision if something is right or if it is wrong. This is typically a decision that a person makes with their own character. Judgment also includes if something is legal or illegal. It is important for nurses to understand the laws when caring for patients to protect the patients safety. Lastly, sanctions are penalties or enforcement. Sanctions include loss of professional reputation/ personal affiliations, and loss of professional respect and fellowship (Edge & Groves, 2018).

    One of the articles that I have found within the past five years, was an article that had a breach in legal requirements and ethical conduct. The article spoke on the topic of a breach in the HIPPA law by not performing a bedside report (Malfait et al., 2019). I consider a nurse neglecting their duty of completing a bedside report at shift change to also be an ethical conduct issue due to the choice the nurse is making. It is an ethical choice to not complete report at bedside. This breaches a law and a duty of the nurse. In this particular case, the nurse involved received a sanction of a written warning (Malfait et al., 2019).
    In the future, this situation could have easily been avoided if the nurse giving report, and the nurse receiving report would have spoken up for the patients right to privacy to have the report at bedside.
